Day 2 Morning – The FAke-UM: Practice Makes Progress

This morning’s session was all about application. As DACUM facilitator trainees, we jumped into the FAke-CUM (Fake SME’s – creating curriculum), applying what we’ve learned by guiding a practice job analysis.

Our objective: simulate the early steps of a real DACUM workshop by drafting a clear job summary, visualizing a simple org chart, and identifying 7 core duties of a selected role.

What the Person in the Position Does:

We focused on phrasing the job description in action-based terms, avoiding vague or abstract language. The goal is to describe what the worker actually does—not what they know or why they do it.

Org Chart Context:

We created a basic organizational structure to clarify:

  • Who the person reports to
  • Who they supervise (if anyone)
  • Who they interact with regularly—external and internal

This helped us understand workflow and workplace context, which helps guide the visualization of work by subject matter experts (SMEs).

This exercise gave us hands-on experience in guiding SMEs toward focused, performance-based descriptions. A great warm-up for building the full DACUM chart!
